Family-Friendly Hotels We Love: Basecamp South Lake Tahoe

With a hipster sleep-away camp vibe, the Basecamp Hotel is a perfect home base for our South Lake Tahoe adventure. Campy details like lanterns and plaid wool add to the in-nature experience, but ‘in-nature’ here means a cozy lobby fireplace with leather couches and a bunk-bed for the little one in our room. We immediately get into the Basecamp vibe and by ‘get into,’ I mean the kiddo jumps on the bed (sorry Basecamp, he’s light!). Hurray for vacation!

Our hotel room has a Queen bed + bunk bed and a balcony with Adirondack chairs, great for parents wanting to stay up after the littles go to sleep. Common area spaces to hang out include two hot tubs and fire-pits in the Airstream courtyard. There’s also cornhole boards, which may or may not be covered in snow. The Hideaway Bar and tables in the lobby are perfect for an apre-ski or hike takeout family dinner. The Beer Garden, family-friendly despite the name, offers bites and array of sausages on the menu.

Night Cap

Settling in for the evening is easy at the Basecamp Hotel. Twinkle lights hang overhead fire-pits and s’mores kits are available in the lobby. Adults can grab a cold brew inside the Basecamp Beer Garden and complimentary hot cocoa is available in the lobby. If rain or winds thwart plans to cozy round the fire, head inside to enjoy free live music.

Rise ‘n shine.

I’m an early-riser these days, up before the sun 7 days a week. This can be a challenge while staying in a hotel room. So while the husband and child snore away the pre-dawn hours, I sneak out to the Basecamp lobby and enjoy complimentary fresh-brewed coffee and cozy in beside the fire and plan our day’s adventures. When the rest of the crew wakes up, we fuel up with a complimentary breakfast including DIY waffles, toast, hard-boiled eggs and oatmeal.

Basecamp is a well-priced hotel home base for a South Lake Tahoe adventure and super family-friendly to boot! Situated on the California and Nevada state line, it’s a short 10-minute walk to the Heavenly Village gondola and eateries. +Tip: Some rooms have balconies, great for parents wanting to stay up after the littles go to sleep. Opt for a room overlooking the Airstream courtyard if possible. Or better yet, try their Great Indoors room with an over-bed tent and indoor picnic table!
